Hush Little Keiki is a playful lullaby to be shared between mothers and children. The melodic text reminds us of the ever-present sweet, gentle, and soothing naturescapes experienced around the islands. Watch mynah birds fly against the setting sun, humpbacks dance across the ocean stage, and evening rains reveal the starry night.

Hush Little Keiki expands on the traditional children’s lullaby, “Hush Little Baby.” This story emphasizes the relationship between a child and their environment by highlighting natural wonders of the Hawaiian islands.

Author Kim Vukovich spent much of her childhood outdoors, playing everywhere from the mountains to the sea on the island of Maui. With the birth of her daughters came the realization of the importance of teaching our keiki to care for the land. Kim believes the first step is for keiki to enjoy the natural world and wrote this lullaby in the hopes of inspiring parents to take their children outside.

Illustrator Mariko Merritt is from Honolulu and works as a graphic designer and independent artist. She is a graduate of Rhode Island School of Design. Mariko is also a ceramist and has a handmade pottery brand called Beachcake.
