Aia he Kāheka / There’s a Tide Pool (bilingual)

This early counting book is a fun way to learn and identify some of the i‘a (Hawaiian sea creatures) that live in the ocean. Count along with the i‘a as they go in and out of a tidepool. See different creatures like the puhi, manini, and po‘opa‘a wash in and out with the waves on the shore of Puako, Hawai‘i.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR AND ILLUSTRATOR:

Makela Bruno-Kidani is a Hawaiian language instructor and former director of Pūnana Leo o Waimea.

Maile Kā‘ai is a Maui-born artist known for her work featuring native Hawaiian flora and fauna.

The ‘Aha Pūnana Leo, Inc. was established in 1983 to revitalize the Hawaiian language primarily through schools taught entirely in Hawaiian. In 1896 a law was passed banning the use of Hawaiian as a medium of education in Hawai‘i’s classrooms. After 90 years, this law was reversed in 1986. The ‘Aha Pūnana Leo has grown to include eleven preschools, three K–12 sites, a scholarship program and other educational programs that promote the growth of Hawaiian as a daily language.
