PAʻA MAILA I KE KEIKI NĀ HANA LAWAIʻA KŪPONO I KONA MALIU ʻANA I KE AʻO A NĀ IʻA I LOAʻA IĀ IA.
A young boy learns kūpono fishing practices from the sea creatures he catches.
Based on a Hawaiian saying that refers to fishing, “Eat some, salt some,” this tale tells of a young fisherman confronted by his catch. By listening to the sea creatures, he learns important lessons about conservation and good fishing practices. He returns home to share his experiences with his kupuna kāne (grandfather), who, to the surprise of the mo‘opuna (grandchild), already knows these important lessons. The story urges us to pay attention to the natural environment and take only what we need.
